Burning question for those who celebrate Christmas: have you set up your Christmas tree yet? Most of the marketing team at Freshpaint has their trees set up because we like happiness and the holiday spirit. But our boss, Ray, is vehemently against setting up a Christmas tree before December.

On to this week’s newsletter. We’ve got a new integration to give healthcare marketers another point of control over their data, a few events to fill your December calendar, a step-by-step guide to finding web trackers on your website, and some bad news for everyone’s favorite Midwest grocer.

Product Update

 

We’re on a journey to give healthcare marketers full control over their visitor data. Doing that means we have to build integrations with all of the tools that healthcare marketers use to create great marketing experiences.

 

Next up on that list? Vimeo. Like YouTube (for which we’ve already built an integration), embedding Vimeo videos on your healthcare website can lead to HIPAA violations. Vimeo has access to contextual health information in any video. On top of that, when you embed a Vimeo video onto your website, you also give Vimeo access to the viewer’s IP address. 

 

Both of those data points make up Protected Health Information. So, to solve that problem, we just added a new Vimeo integration to our Healthcare Privacy Platform. The integration prevents Vimeo from getting access to your visitors’ IP addresses.

You might not know it, but there are web trackers sitting on your website that collect data from your visitors. At the very least, they all have access to your visitors’ IP addresses. That’s half of PHI right there. If those web trackers have access to any health information, then you’re giving those trackers the full PHI picture on your website visitors. 

 

That’s a HIPAA violation.

With all the turkey and Thanksgiving festivities going on last week, you might’ve missed this news out of Ohio: Kroger is being sued for sharing sensitive customer health data without permission.

 

That’s the same thing that put Costco in hot water earlier this year.

 

**steps up on soapbox** This is further proof that consumers want data privacy. It doesn’t matter if you’re a traditional healthcare organization or a retail pharmacy. If you’re not locking down your visitors’ data, you could find yourself on the wrong end of a lawsuit or fine. It’s been a year since the HHS released its updated guidance about the use of web trackers. If you haven’t fixed the problem, what are you waiting for? **steps off soapbox**
